A zone is a named group of countries, states, and provinces. Each rule has its own rates for every zone, and at checkout ShipMagic uses the zone that contains the customer’s address. You manage zones on the Shipping Zones page in the app.

Where your first zones come from

When you install ShipMagic, it creates your first zones from your Shopify setup:
  • Stores using shipping profiles: one zone for each shipping zone in your General profile.
  • Stores using market-driven shipping: one zone for each active market, named after the market.
From then on, your zones belong to ShipMagic. Editing your Shopify shipping settings or markets doesn’t change your ShipMagic zones, and editing ShipMagic zones doesn’t change Shopify.
Sync now has been retired. ShipMagic used to copy your Shopify zones with a Sync now button in Settings. You now add and edit zones directly on the Shipping Zones page.

Adding a zone

1

Open Shipping Zones

In the app, go to Shipping Zones and click Add zone.
2

Name the zone

Customers never see zone names. Use a name that’s clear on your rules, like Domestic or Europe.
3

Choose the regions

Search for a country and tick it to include the whole country. To include only some of its states or provinces, expand the country and tick the ones you want.
4

Save

The new zone appears on all your rules, with no rates yet.
A new zone has no rates. Customers in it won’t see ShipMagic rates until you open your rules and add rates for the zone.

Each region is in one zone

A country, state, or province can belong to only one zone, so it’s always clear which rates apply. When you choose regions:
  • A country that’s already in another zone is greyed out and labelled with that zone’s name.
  • Inside a country, states or provinces that are already in another zone are greyed out too.
To move a region to a different zone, remove it from its current zone first, then add it to the other one.

Rest of world

Tick Rest of world to make a zone that covers every country and province that isn’t in another zone. You can have one Rest of world zone.

Editing and deleting zones

Open a zone from the Shipping Zones list to rename it or change its regions. When you delete a zone, ShipMagic lists the rules that have rates for it before you confirm. After you delete it, those rates stop applying. Customers in its regions get your Rest of world rates if you have a Rest of world zone, and no ShipMagic rates if you don’t.

Markets without ShipMagic

If your store uses market-driven shipping, Shopify only asks ShipMagic for rates in markets where ShipMagic is added as a carrier-calculated shipping rate. If a market doesn’t have it, the Shipping Zones page shows a warning listing that market. Click the market’s name to open it in Shopify and add ShipMagic.

If no zones appear

If a rule shows a warning instead of your zones, your store doesn’t have any zones yet. Add one on the Shipping Zones page.

Zones with no rates

A zone that has no rates shows a warning inside the rule:
No rates. Customers in this zone won’t see shipping rates from ShipMagic app.
This is worth taking seriously. A rule can match a customer’s cart perfectly and still return nothing if their zone has no rate.

Custom shipping profiles

On stores using shipping profiles, ShipMagic is added to the General profile automatically. To use it on a custom profile, add it there as a rate provider (see the Installation Guide). If that profile ships to regions your ShipMagic zones don’t cover, add those regions on the Shipping Zones page.
