# Create a Basic Shipping Customization

> Hide, show, rename, or reorder the shipping methods your customers see at checkout

A **shipping customization** changes the delivery options a customer sees at checkout, based on conditions you set. It doesn't calculate prices — it acts on the rates you already have.

<Note>
  Shipping Customizations change **what customers see**. To calculate a price Shopify can't work out natively, use [Shipping Rates](/shipping-rates/basic-shipping-rate) instead. Not sure which you need? See [Rates vs Customizations](/core-concepts/rates-vs-customizations).
</Note>

## Before you start

Customizations act on rates that already exist, so set those up first in **Shopify Admin → Settings → Shipping and Delivery**. They can be manual Shopify rates, ShipMagic rates, or both.

<Tip>
  Two things that make customizations easier than rates:

  * They work on **all Shopify plans** — CCS is not required.
  * They **don't need product syncing**. Shopify sends product data to customizations at checkout directly.
</Tip>

## Create the customization

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Shipping Customizations and click Create Customization">
    From the left navigation panel in the app, open **Shipping Customizations**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose a Type">
    The type decides what the rule does when it matches:

    | Type | Effect |
    | - | - |
    | **Hide shipping rates** | Hides the methods you list. |
    | **Show shipping rates** | Shows the methods you list. |
    | **Only show specified shipping rates and hide rest** | Shows the methods you list and hides everything else. |
    | **Reorder shipping rates** | Changes the order methods appear in. |
    | **Rename shipping rates** | Changes the label the customer sees. |

    See [Actions (Hide / Rename / Sort)](/ai-tools/actions-hide-rename-sort) for the details of each.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Name the rule">
    For example `Hide free shipping for heavy items`. This name is internal and is never shown to customers.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add your conditions">
    Choose whether the rule must match **All conditions** or **Any condition**, then add conditions. Customizations can match on cart, product, customer, address, and shipping-method attributes — including some that aren't available to shipping rates, such as **Product Collection**, **Shopify Market**, **Customer Company**, **Is subscription product**, and **Address is a PO Box**.

    See [Cart Conditions](/cart-conditions), [Product Attributes](/product-attributes), [Customer Attributes](/customer-attributes-1), and [Customer Location and Address](/customer-location-and-address-1).

    <Warning>
      The attributes are split across **three parameter sets**, and a rule may only use attributes from one of them. If the attribute you need isn't in the dropdown, switch sets using the link at the top-right of the Conditions card. See [Parameter Sets](/ai-tools/different-parameter-sets-for-conditions).
    </Warning>
  </Step>

  <Step title="List the shipping methods to act on">
    Under **Action**, enter the name of each method the rule should affect. Click **Add another method** for more than one.

    <Tip>
      **Partial names match.** Entering `Express` matches both "Express Shipping" and "Express Delivery". Use this to catch several methods at once — but keep it specific enough that it doesn't catch methods you meant to leave alone.
    </Tip>

    For **Rename**, you also give the new name. For **Reorder**, you also give the new position.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set Apply rule to">
    * **All shipments** (default) — the rule applies to every shipment in the order.
    * **Only the first shipment** — for subscription sellers who want the rule to affect only the first shipment's shipping method.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Set status and save">
    Leave **Status** as *Active*, then **Save**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## A worked example

Show a "Free Prime Shipping" method only to customers tagged `prime`. This takes two customizations — one to show it to members, one to hide it from everyone else.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Create the rate in Shopify">
    In **Settings → Shipping and Delivery**, add a rate named `Free Prime Shipping` to your zone.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Customization 1 — show it to prime customers">
    ```text theme={null}
    Type: Only show specified shipping rates and hide rest
    Name: Prime customers rule
    Condition 1: Customer Tag <> Equals <> prime
    Show the following shipping methods: Free Prime Shipping
    ```
  </Step>

  <Step title="Customization 2 — hide it from everyone else">
    ```text theme={null}
    Type: Hide shipping rates
    Name: Regular customers rule
    Condition 1: Customer Tag <> Not equals <> prime
    Hide the following shipping methods: Free Prime Shipping
    ```
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Test your customization

1. Open your storefront and log in as a customer who matches your conditions
2. Add matching products to the cart and proceed to checkout
3. Enter a complete address
4. In test mode, enter `shipmagic` as the **first name**
