# Cart Conditions

> Match customization rules on cart subtotal, quantity, weight, and cart attributes

Cart conditions for customizations look at the order as a whole. They're how you gate a shipping method on order value or weight.

<Note>
  This page covers cart conditions for **Shipping Customizations**. For the rate equivalent — which has a larger attribute list — see [Cart Conditions](/cart-subtotal) under Shipping Rates.
</Note>

## Available attributes

| Attribute | Parameter set | Operators |
| - | - | - |
| **Cart Subtotal** | 1, 3 | Equals, Not equals, Greater than, Less than, Greater than or equal, Less than or equal |
| **Cart Quantity** | 1 | Equals, Not equals, Greater than, Less than, Greater than or equal, Less than or equal |
| **Cart Weight** | 1, 3 | Equals, Not equals, Greater than, Less than, Greater than or equal, Less than or equal |
| **Cart Attribute** | 2 | Equals, Not equals, Contains, Does not contains, Is empty, Is not empty |

<Warning>
  A rule may only use attributes from **one parameter set**. Cart Attribute lives in set 2, so it cannot be combined with Cart Quantity (set 1). See [Parameter Sets](/ai-tools/different-parameter-sets-for-conditions).
</Warning>

## Cart Attribute

Cart attributes are custom key/value pairs attached to the cart by your theme or a third-party app — gift options, delivery preferences, a chosen pickup location.

Because they're set by your storefront rather than by Shopify, what's available depends entirely on your theme. Check what your cart is actually sending before building a rule on it.

<Tip>
  `Is empty` and `Is not empty` are useful here — they let you test whether the customer made a choice at all, without caring what they chose.
</Tip>

## Cart Subtotal

The most common cart condition, used for free-shipping eligibility:

```text theme={null}
Condition 1: Cart Subtotal <> Greater than or equal <> 100
```

<Note>
  Unlike the rates side, customizations expose a single **Cart Subtotal** rather than separate before-discount and after-discount values.
</Note>

## Cart Weight

Weight is in your store's weight unit. Use it to withdraw options a carrier can't actually handle:

```text theme={null}
Type: Hide shipping rates
Condition 1: Cart Weight <> Greater than <> 30
Hide the following shipping methods: Express
```

## Examples

**Free shipping only above a threshold**

```text theme={null}
Type: Hide shipping rates
Condition 1: Cart Subtotal <> Less than <> 75
Hide the following shipping methods: Free Shipping
```

**No express option for very large orders**

```text theme={null}
Type: Hide shipping rates
Rule must match: Any condition
Condition 1: Cart Quantity <> Greater than <> 20
Condition 2: Cart Weight <> Greater than <> 30
Hide the following shipping methods: Express
```
